What the law requires

Article R611-42 of the French immigration code (CESEDA) requires hosts accommodating foreign travellers to have them complete an individual form. It includes surname and first names, date and place of birth, nationality, usual address, and the arrival and expected departure dates.

The form must be available to the authorities on request. In practice this is the most tedious part of hosting: copying a passport by hand after a late arrival, then finding the right sheet again six months later.

Frequently asked questions

Does the police form apply to all my guests?
The requirement in article R611-42 targets foreign travellers. Many hosts nonetheless collect the same details for every arrival, for simplicity and to keep a consistent record in case of dispute.
Can I replace the paper form with a digital version?
Yes. The form may be completed by the traveller and kept electronically, provided it can be shown to the authorities on request. CheckInn produces an exportable PDF at any time.
How long is the data kept?
You set the duration. By default CheckInn archives a completed stay and then automatically deletes identity documents after 30 days, in line with the GDPR data minimisation principle.
Where are identity documents stored?
On servers located in Europe, encrypted at rest. Only the property owner can view their own guests' documents.
Do my guests need to install an app?
No. They open a link in their browser and complete the form in about five minutes, from a phone or a computer.
